Why the Brillion Cultipacker Seeder Is Different
The Brillion seeder isn’t a standard broadcast spreader or box drill. It’s a cultipacker seeder — meaning it firms the seedbed before the seed drops and culipacks again after. That two-stage firming action is what sets Brillion apart for small-seeded species where seed-to-soil contact is the single biggest determinant of establishment success.
The sequence every time you make a pass:
1. Front packer rolls firm and level the seedbed. Eliminates air pockets and creates a consistent, firm surface for seed placement.
2. Seed meters drop seed at a precise, calibrated rate. The metering system is adjustable for an extremely wide range of seed sizes — from fine grasses to larger legumes.
3. Rear packer rolls press seed into firm contact with the soil. This is the critical step that dramatically improves germination rates versus broadcasting alone.
The result: more uniform emergence, faster establishment, and less seed wasted to poor soil contact — which is especially important when you’re seeding expensive alfalfa, clover, or food plot species.
What the Brillion Does Best
| Best applications — Alfalfa and hay ground establishment — Clover and grass-legume mix seeding — Pasture renovation and overseeding — Food plot establishment (clover, brassica mixes, native grasses) — Winter wheat and small grain seeding — Roadside and CRP seedings | Where it’s not the right tool — Corn and soybean planting (use a row planter) — Rocky or very rough ground without prior tillage — Seeding into standing heavy residue without prior work — Applications requiring row spacing precision |
The Herd Seeder: What It Is and How It’s Different
The term ‘herd seeder’ describes a category of seeder used in pasture management — seeding into existing sod without full tillage. The Brillion seeder can function as a herd seeder when used with appropriate ground preparation, but a true herd seeder or sod seeder uses coulters or disk openers to cut into existing sod before placing seed.
For pasture interseeding — adding legumes like red clover or birdsfoot trefoil into an existing grass stand — the Brillion seeder after a light discing or harrowing pass works very well. The cultipacker action firms the sod back down after seeding, improving seed-to-soil contact in an existing stand.
If your goal is true no-till sod seeding without any prior ground disturbance, a dedicated no-till drill with coulter openers is a better tool. We can discuss your specific situation and recommend the right approach — call us.
Setting Up Your Brillion for Different Seeds
The Brillion’s seed metering system is one of its most valuable features — it handles a wide range of seed sizes from fine grasses to larger legumes. General seed rate starting points for Missouri applications:
| Species | Seeding rate (lbs/acre) | Notes |
| Red clover | 8–12 | Inoculate before seeding; firm seedbed essential |
| Alfalfa | 15–20 | pH 6.5+ required; cultipack is critical for alfalfa |
| Ladino (white) clover | 2–4 | Very small seed — fine meter setting; firm seedbed |
| Timothy grass | 6–8 | Shallow seeding depth 1/4″–1/2″ |
| Orchardgrass | 8–10 | Slightly deeper than timothy; tolerates shade |
| Fescue | 15–20 | Versatile — calibrate meter to variety |
| Winter wheat | 90–120 | Use coarser meter setting; standard depth |
| Food plot clover mix | 6–10 | Per mix instructions; firm seedbed improves results |
| Native grass mixes | Varies | Per species mix — consult Missouri Southern Seed |
Always calibrate your specific seeder with the actual seed you’re planting before going to the field. Run a tray calibration over a measured distance to confirm actual delivery rate.
